Art project / pen, ink, watercolor

Bequia studies.

A small island, a rented house, and a return to art through repeated studies of one place.

Pen, ink, and watercolor study of Bequia harbor with green hills, blue water, and small boats.
Bequia harbor, built from washes of green and blue, small boats, and the little marks that turn a hillside into a place.

Lynn and I grew to love Bequia, a tiny island off St. Vincent, part of the Grenadines.

We rented a house there for several months, and the time gave me a chance to return to art. I had space, quiet, and the ordinary repetition of seeing the same island every day from different angles and moods.

The Bequia work is mostly pen, ink, and watercolor. It is not one finished object as much as a set of studies: harbor views, hillsides, beach buildings, palms, flowers, boats, and the small marks that help me remember how a place felt.

Like the Santorini project, this was a way of learning through repetition. The subject stayed close at hand. The variables changed: distance, light, weather, foreground, color, and how much line to leave visible under the wash.

Studies of one island.

The page gathers representative Bequia studies rather than every duplicate or progress photo. Together they show the return to drawing, the watercolor experiments, and the gradual shift from looking at a place to remembering it.

Bequia gave me the time to look again, and the work came back through the habit of looking.
